Memorial Event in Honor of Alan (“Mickey”) Hammerman

In memory and honor of Alan ("Mickey") Hammerman '55, who passed in early 2022, HCC will hold a gathering at The Chicago Club on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at 4pm. The memorial event will be open to members of the Harvard community and your families. Mickey's family and others who wish to recognize Mickey will also be in attendance. There will be several speakers, each representing a significant part of Mickey's life, including Mickey’s longtime friend, Dean William R. Fitzsimmons.

Mickey Hammerman '55 was a longtime club member and tireless contributor to our Harvard community. He twice served as president of the Harvard Club of Chicago, was longstanding co-chair of the Club's Schools Committee, and was chair of the Harvard Alumni Association’s National Schools and Scholarships Committee. Mickey interviewed hundreds of students, raised the profile of our region's talent, and underscored the importance of financial aid. His vision and service laid the groundwork for the thriving club and Schools Committee programs we have today. Mickey was a 2018 recipient of HCC's Lifetime Achievement Award, and was a mentor and dear friend to so many.

We will provide a remote viewing opportunity for those who cannot attend in person.

Please see below regarding how to submit memories of Mickey, including short notes and photos, for a memory book, web page and slideshow that HCC is putting together for the event.

Please Submit Your Memories of Mickey

Mickey had a positive impact on so many, including family, friends, classmates and fellow Harvard Club of Chicago members. For the HCC memorial event, we are putting together a booklet and/or slideshow featuring photos and written messages about Mickey that will eventually be part of a permanent memorial page on the HCC website. We have set up a temporary email (mickey55memorial@gmail.com) to collect written messages about Mickey and any photos of Mickey that you wish to share.

We encourage everyone who wishes to express their gratitude and memories of Mickey to submit a short note, exactly as you’d like it written and attributed (your first name, last name or initial, and, if you choose, class year or other identifier). Please also attach any photos that you’d like to share.

All notes should and photos should be sent to: mickey55memorial@gmail.com.

Mickey Hammerman Annual Legacy Event and How to Donate

The Harvard Club of Chicago in conjunction with the Chicago Region Schools Committee is establishing a Fund to honor Mickey’s legacy.  This Fund will be used to host an annual event featuring two things that meant so much to Mickey.

First, Mickey’s devotion to early childhood education is well known. His donation on behalf of the Saul Zaentz foundation to the the Harvard Graduate School of Education was the largest in its history at that time. Each year, the event will feature an expert who can speak about best practices, research, and scholarship in education.

Second, it was Mickey’s wish that all applicants to Harvard College from the Chicago Region receive an alumni interview. As the number of applicants has grown each year, it has become difficult to honor Mickey’s wish. This event will promote and recognize interviewers in order to continue his legacy. It will also be used to not only recognize outstanding interviewers but to attract more interviewers.

The Mickey Hammerman memorial event will be held each fall in conjunction with an interviewer training meeting and as a kick-off to the coming interview season.

We are seeking donations that will endow the annual Mickey Hammerman Legacy Fund and sustain it year after year. All donations are tax deductible.
